28 Day February Pointe Challenge | Sick Puppy | Adult Ballet Blog

I started the 28 Day February pointe challenge on Instagram and have definitely fell behind a bit from not feeling well and being very stressed. Last week after ballet class, I got home to find my little Westie, Daisy, shaking and looking scared and sad. She is my best friend and I’ve had her since she was a puppy, I can’t imagine us not being together! We went and laid down in bed and she seemed okay and fell asleep. In the middle of the night she started shaking again, panting very hard and couldn’t stand up. He back legs were kind of twisting around as well. I called the local 24 hour emergency vet and we rushed there as fast as possible on the icy road. They wanted to know if she had eaten any garbage or anything since she had symptoms of toxicity, but we knew she hadn’t. They gave her valume and kept her overnight to be evaluated in the morning by the neurologist. The doctor called me the next morning and said that there were 3 things that could have happened: 1.) cancer, 2.) A mysterious neurological disorder called White Shakers Syndrome (this is what it ended up being) or 3.) Toxicity from an antibiotic she was on. She had an MRI and spinal tap which confirmed #2. This disease doesn’t have much research done on it and is fairly uncommon, but manageable. If she did not have diabetes as well it would be completely easy to treat but the two counteract each other. After $4,000 and 4 nights in the hospital, my baby came home! She’s much happier at home for sure, and even though she’s still stumbling and wobbly, she’s up and about and very happy to be in her own bed. We set up a Go Fund Me (http://www.gofundme.com/p44nxfxg) for her because the bills we just accrued are going to be very hard to manage, especially with the uncertainty of my job in the next couple months.

So I’m hoping to be able to go to pointe class tonight, because I’m not taking the March session due to a photography event and going to Florida for a week (but I’d miss 2 classes), but the Instagram challenges are going to make sure I stay strong. I have my own hotel room so the pointe shoes will be coming with me and I’ll be arabesque-ing all over Disney World! My Dad and Step Mom set up this trip last year, and paid for everything, and I was really excited to go until this huge financial hit. I may be living off ramen noodles for the week and coming back with no souvineers (the photos should be amusing at least)!

Happy Dancing!
